Us too!
Lets learn
more about
glass!

FOUR FASCINATING
GLASS FACTS!
Did you know....
1.

GLASS BLOWING WAS INVENTED IN SYRIA!
It's believed that Glass Blowing was invented in the 1st Century BC by the Syrians! The craft has since evolved into the art we know today, but has remained largely unchanged since the 1600s.
2.

GLASS COMES FROM SAND!
Once the sand is collected and a few other ingredients added, it is then shipped to our small shop on Whidbey Island, where we melt it into a liquid we can shape.
3.

HOW HOT IS GLASS?
It is HOT. Our furnaces melt the glass at around 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit. We collect the glass on pipes and wait for it too cool to about 2,100 degrees before we can shape it.
4.

WHAT DOES BLOWING GLASS FEEL LIKE?

Blowing glass feels like shaping super hot liquid with a consistency of honey.
We recommend trying to shape melted sugar for a similar experience to blowing glass, just be careful-it can be very hot and can burn!

ATHENIAN LIFESTYLE
GLASS CARE
You dont need to do much to take care of your glasses, mainly be gentle! Glass can be incredible sturdy, but because our glass blowers are so skilled, they are able to blow the glass to be super thin, making the cups extra beautiful & more fragile. So handle with care!
Every five years or so we polish the silver wrap with lemon & toothpaste to really make it shine!
Glass can crack when experiencing extreme temperature changes in a short period of time.
We generally try to not to wash with super hot water, just to be safe!
